FAQ
Q. How do you define 'copy
editing'?
A copy editor is an expert in written communication. The task of the copy editor
is to make sure a writer's ideas are communicated to the target audience in the
most effective way. Sometimes this means ordering ideas differently from how
they first appeared. Sometimes it means altering the style of a piece; for
example, making the language less or more formal. Sometimes it means translating
ideas from one culture so they can be understood by another culture.
Copy editing means applying rigorous standards of
language, style and presentation to a manuscript to achieve maximum clarity and
maximum outreach.
Copy editing automatically includes proofreading.
Q. How do you define 'research'?
Research means looking afresh for existing information that can be applied to a
problem; and, optionally, applying it (or helping the author apply it) in a
written report, submission or proposal.
Q. What are the 'writing services' you offer?
We are experienced authors in a variety of genres. We prepare (and, if required,
research) reports, proposals and submissions that may be used either internally
or externally by an organisation. We undertake book-length projects or simple
executive summaries. EDiT's clients include local government authorities,
commercial corporations, tertiary educational institutions and private
individuals. We undertake the whole writing task, or co-author or ghost write as
required.
Q. How do you define 'proofreading'?
The term originated in an earlier age of printing. When an author had completed
a project a typesetter set in place the type for each page. A 'proof' page was
then printed and sent for correction. Corrections were limited to misspellings,
incorrect spacings, incorrectly placed headings or captions, incorrect numbering
of pages and other such errors. It was not a time for major editing or
re-writing.
That is our view of proofreading. We provide an
expert service that removes typographical errors and inconsistency from a work
that is otherwise ready to publish.
Q. What are the 'pre-press' services you offer?
Depending on your need, we can start at the beginning and suggest a choice of
layouts, fonts, colour ways, papers, cover designs and other features to enhance
your text and graphics.
We can prepare your book for the printer, creating
a PDF file that can be printed and bound without the need for further input.
Q. What quality standards
do you use?
Stylistically our chief authority is The Chicago Manual of Style, although we
are happy to work to other major standards or the in-house style guides used by
some organisations.
Our work is subject to continuous peer review.
Every text is processed a minimum of three times by at least two different
editors.
